The mechanism

The rescue request gives the venue an interceptable path.

Modern websites normally use HTTPS. That encryption is essential because it prevents a network from silently replacing the requested website with different content.

Many legacy captive portals still detect or redirect plain HTTP traffic. Opening a deliberately plain rescue URL gives the venue one fresh request that it may redirect to its own sign-in page.

Security boundary

The plain page is disposable and untrusted.

A public network can read or modify an unencrypted response. The WiFi 4 Breakfast rescue page therefore contains no form, account, cookie, personal state, portal credentials, analytics, or arbitrary redirect.

Enter any room number, surname, voucher, email address, payment detail, or password only on the venue page you intentionally choose to use. Stop if the browser presents a certificate warning.

The HTTP page helps with portal discovery. It does not make the network trustworthy.

Limits

A plain request cannot repair every network.

The portal may be offline, the venue may block unknown domains, the session may be stuck, or a VPN, proxy, DNS setting, or managed policy may alter the route. The request can create an opportunity for a portal to appear, not guarantee it.
