Before settling in
Ask about access, not just the password.
Our suggested questions: Is laptop use welcome here? Which network is for guests? Is access time-limited? Are calls allowed? Is there an expected sign-in page? These questions can save more time than repeatedly reconnecting.
WiFi 4 Breakfast does not rate cafés, certify operators, or keep a database of hotspot passwords.
Device setup
Keep guest Wi-Fi separate from trusted sharing.
On Windows, open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, select the connected network, and check that Network profile type is Public. Microsoft says this hides your PC from other devices and prevents file and printer sharing; Private is for networks whose people and devices you trust.
On any work laptop, follow your organisation’s sharing and remote-access policy. Do not turn off security software or a required VPN to make a café connection usable. Ask IT for an approved alternative.
Check your actual work
A loaded homepage is not a rehearsal for your next call.
Before a meeting, use your meeting app’s test facility or arrange a short test with a colleague. Check the audio, video, and connection where you will actually sit. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that the connection will stay reliable.
- Download the files you will need before the session starts.
- Avoid beginning a large optional upload right before a call.
- Have a backup: mobile hotspot if your plan and employer allow it, a different workspace, or a way to reschedule.
- Keep confidential conversations and visible documents in mind as well as the connection.
When it stops working
Try the login again before changing everything.
Guest access can expire. Check for a new sign-in prompt, then use Wi-Fi Rescue if that page is missing. If the login completes but your work app still fails, use guided help or ask staff about an outage. Do not assume repeated failure means the device is broken.
If the sign-in begins making unexpected requests, stop and verify it. Before you leave, restore any temporary VPN or DNS changes. Follow your device’s option to forget the guest network if you do not want to retain it.
